What it does

  • Builds a hard seasoning

Thin coats of flaxseed oil bake into a dark layer that protects the iron and helps food release.

  • Organic flaxseed oil

Made from organic flaxseed oil, in an amber bottle that keeps light off the oil.

  • A little goes a long way

About 1 tablespoon per coat for a skillet, wiped back until the pan looks almost dry.

How to use

How to use Cast iron oil

Season a new or stripped pan in the oven. Each coat takes a little over three hours, most of it cooling time.

The same steps are printed on the back of every bottle.
  1. Warm the pan

Warm a clean cast iron pan for 15 minutes in a 200°F oven to open its pores.

  2. Oil it, then wipe it back

Take the pan out and add 1 tablespoon of Cast iron oil. Using tongs, rub the oil into the surface with paper towels, then wipe the pan out thoroughly with fresh towels to remove the excess.

  3. Bake it upside down

Place the pan upside down in a cold oven, set it to 450°F and heat for 60 minutes. Turn the oven off and let the pan cool inside for at least two hours.

  4. Repeat until dark

Repeat five more times, or until the pan has a dark, semi-matte surface.

Warning:Paper towels soaked in flaxseed oil can heat up and catch fire as they dry. Soak used towels in water and seal them in a bag before you throw them away.

Questions about Cast iron oil

How is Cast iron oil different from Cast iron conditioner?

Cast iron oil builds seasoning in the oven. Cast iron conditioner is refined coconut oil you wipe on after each wash to protect that seasoning.

How many coats does a new pan need?

Six thin coats is a good start: the first coat plus five repeats. Stop when the surface is dark and semi-matte.

Why is my pan sticky after seasoning?

Too much oil was left on. Wipe each coat back until the pan looks almost dry before it goes in the oven.

How should I store Cast iron oil?

Keep the bottle in the fridge after opening. Flaxseed oil keeps longer cold.

Is Cast iron oil vegan?

Yes. It is one ingredient, organic flaxseed oil, and is suitable for vegans and vegetarians.
